In the villages of Akçapınar and Akyaka you will find the flowing stream of the Azmak river. The water here is very clear and very cold at an average depth of 6 metres, making it perfect for swimming on hot summer days. Home to the spotted fresh water turtle, otters, waterfowl, a variety of fish and many plant species, it is not surprising that over 1 million tourists are attracted here every year. The creek is around 2km long and can be explored by boat or by canoe.
I recently went on a boat trip along the creek starting in Akçapınar, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Once you’re on your way, you get transported to a different world. The serenity of the river is breathtaking. The reeds either side tower over adding beauty and mystery, and the clear water allows you to see any underwater life that may be around. Further down the scenery changes to lush green forest, it’s no surprise that the area is often referred to as the ‘Little Amazon’. We even went out into the Gulf of Gökova and swam in the sea while watching the sunset. It is one of the best tourist activities I have done since moving to the area and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys being in nature.
There are a few different ways you can enjoy the river. We had a private boat with friends where we brought our own refreshments and could play our own music. This is available from 50TL per person or a minimum of 300TL. Canoes are also available for 100TL, you get your life jacket and someone following you on a boat (for your safety) for that price. Lastly, there is access to the water from Akyaka. There is a public area that is very popular, especially with families, where the water is shallow and easy to navigate. You can drive here, park and bring your own chairs if you want. There are also some lovely restaurants just a short walk from there, with their seating areas faced out onto the water. They’re great places to get some fresh seafood. Whilst it is a lovely spot that we visit often, I don’t think you get the full experience unless you do the boat tour.
Overall, I had a great time. Turkey never stops amazing me with its natural beauty, I don’t know how anyone could come here and not fall in love. If you decide to go, I would recommend going around sunset. You miss the scorching midday sun, it’s still warm enough to swim, and you get to see the gorgeous view of the sun going down behind the mountains.
