Cycling in Marmaris

If you’ve ever been to Turkey before, you may not be too open to the thought of riding a bike there, particularly on the road. However, Marmaris is actually a great place to cycle, and before the intense summer heat starts is the best time.

Where to cycle?

The main centre now has blue cycle paths to the side of the road and these are spacious enough to allow people to pass each other. Many of them also have small bumps to ensure that there is a separation between them and the road. These paths are for cyclists only and not for motorbikes. You can go all the way along this route from Marmaris to Içmeler and it’s around 8km so you can do this in less than an hour. There is also the shopping centre Blue Port on the way you may choose to stop at.

For those with more experience, this website shows you some longer routes you can take as well as information on the terrain.

How do I get a bike?

There are bicycles out and available to rent all around the beach fronts of Marmaris and Içmeler with pricing starting from around 10TL (£1). These are on a first come first serve basis. For those who will need a bike for an extended period of time, there are plenty of companies you can find online that will drop off and pick up from your hotel. This is an example.

What to watch out for?

Make sure to watch out for no cycling signs, I believe there are some along the beach. Whilst you may see people completely ignoring them, with no consequence, there is also a chance you upset a local and you don’t want to end up in a confrontation on your holidays. These signs are also mostly found in very busy areas where you would struggle to comfortably ride anyway. The pedestrian-only areas do have the cycle path attached to the road so it may mean you’ll have to temporarily divert and come back to your beachfront view.

I should also mention that for the moment at least, masks are to be worn at all times when outdoors. Including when riding a bike.
