What to do if you have an emergency in Marmaris

When you’re in an unfamiliar place it can be very stressful if something goes wrong, especially if you don’t speak the local language. Luckily, Marmaris is a relatively small place with many people who can understand basic English. The emergency number to use in Turkey is 112 and from there you can say if you’d like police, fire or ambulance. If you need to contact any of the people listed below and are worried about the cost, or not being able to connect, try entering the number on WhatsApp and you may get a result as it is very popular here.

I need a Dentist

If you are suffering from a dental emergency I would highly recommend Dr Özge Kolkesen Şahin. This dentist has a great reputation and I know many people who have been patients of hers that speak very highly. ‘Ağız Diş ve Çene Cerrahisi Uzmanı Özge Kolkesen’ is the name of the practice which translates as ‘Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Özge Kolkesen’ and it’s open daily from 9-7:30. You can find contact details on the website here but you may need to right-click and translate the page from Turkish. I should also add that the location shown on Google is correct but the picture is very old and shows an empty lot, there is now a building there and you will need to go upstairs to get to the practice.

I need a Lawyer

Duran Binay is the lawyer I’d personally recommend contacting if you need any help! We have used him many times, most recently to assist with paperwork pertaining to visas, and he was nothing but helpful and made the whole process completely stress free. He can also help with divorces, property purchase/sales, legal help and much more. The best way to contact him is to call or message +90 (532) 599 02 73 (his number also works on Whatsapp).

I need a VET

Having 2 dogs myself, I visit Green Vet Marmaris (@greenveteriner on Instagram) for all my pet needs including grooming, vaccinations and food/toys. They’re open 9-7 every day and can be found here. The place is spotless, the vets are friendly and highly knowledgeable and I always feel my dog is safe here. They even have 5 stars on Google!

I need a Consulate/Embassy

Maybe you’ve lost your passport, or lost a loved one or any number of other things and need some specific help. This webpage provides contact details of those who can assist you in Marmaris and much of this can be achieved online. However, some of this does come at a cost. The building itself is called ‘İngiltere Fahri Konsolosluğu’ but if you’re reading this during covid, know the staff are working remotely so telephone or email is the best way to contact them. There is only one British embassy in Turkey and that is in Ankara. For Russian citizens, the closest consulate is in Antalya and for US citizens, there is none except Ankara and Istanbul. For those wishing to look into Turkish visas then there is also VFS global which can assist.

I need a Doctor

If you have some minor ailments but do not need to go to a hospital, pharmacies are perfect. I would recommend Hekimoğlu Pharmacy found here. They’re open 8-9 every day.

From here they will be able to tell you If you need more professional advice/help. Turkey does not have GP surgeries like the UK, you have to visit a hospital to see anyone for medical advice. Whilst healthcare in Turkey is much cheaper than in places such as the US, I would still highly recommend having insurance for the duration of your stay.

Turkey has state hospitals and private hospitals, if you had to ring an ambulance for a dire emergency they will bring you to the closest state hospital and you will not be charged. However, outside of such emergencies, I would recommend going to a private hospital. Having been to both I would say the private hospital in Marmaris is much more comfortable for patients and you’re also more likely to find someone who can help you in English. Between us, my last experience at the public hospital in Beldibi involved watching a security guard pull down his mask and light up a cigarette in front of a no-smoking sign. There was also street cats wandering around the hospital and all of the windows in the building were open even in the evening (I’m sure the mosquitos loved it). They did however do a great job at their patient care and I’m very grateful for the doctors. The largest and most high tech hospital in Marmaris is the Marmaris Yücelen Hastanesi, this is the private hospital I would suggest.
